A world of ideas for a community's challenges.

Dear Voter,

I'm writing to ask for your help as I take on the biggest challenge of my life. I have filed to run for the Los Angeles City Council 4th District seat vacated by the recent passing of John Ferraro. The special election will take place on September 11, 2001.

I'm particularly excited because we're on the verge of a historical change in Los Angeles City politics, as we elect the first progressive mayor in LA's history, as well as Tom Hayden to City Council. The moment has arrived for progressive ideas and programs to guide our city to a better quality of life.

My district includes some or all of the communities of Hollywood, North Hollywood, Studio City, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Hancock Park, Miracle Mile and the Wilshire District.  I intend to give our new neighborhood councils extensive decision-making power. Rest assured that when I am in office, every voice shall be heard and counted.

You probably know that I am the President and Co-Founder of the Miracle Mile Action Committee, an organization that just had another victory in preserving the historic, affordable buildings in my neighborhood from the bulldozers of the developers.  You also might know that I was Executive Director for Southern California Americans for Democratic Action from 1994-1997.  I have fought for campaign finance reform, preservation of all 1,100 acres of the Ballona Wetlands, against nuclear power, against Proposition 187, and much more.

In the near future, the City of Los Angeles will have a more truly democratic and effective government.  I invite you to invest your time, energy and money into my campaign as we work to achieve these goals.  I am in this campaign to win, and I need your help. I need to raise $25,000 by June 30, in order to qualify for matching funds from the City of Los Angeles.  I am asking 50 people to commit to raising $500 each, either by making a donation of $500, asking friends and co-workers to contribute, or hosting a house party fundraiser.  In addition, I need your help with phone banking and precinct walking.  If you don't have time, can you recommend some people who might be able to help me in this race?  Last Sunday we formed our enthusiastic and talented campaign team. We are building a winning strategy that will target every community in the district.  Join us.

I will represent the 4th District well.  Thank you for helping to make this dream a reality.
